What is Special About the Gua Tempurung Caves?
Gua Tempurung cave is a remarkable natural wonder; this stunning limestone cave dates back a staggering 400 million years. Interestingly, some of the ceilings in these chambers bear a striking resemblance to coconut shells, which is why the cave earned its name “tempurung,” meaning coconut shell in Malay.
When you explore it, you have the unique opportunity to venture approximately 2 kilometres into the tunnel that winds beneath Gunung Tempurung and Gunung Gajah. Inside, an underground river gracefully flows, extending for 1.6 kilometres within the cave’s depths.
The cave is divided into five chambers, each with its own distinct character:
- Golden Flowstone Cavern (smooth stones with golden sheen)
- Gergasi (Giant) Cavern (15-metre high column as a centrepiece)
- Tin Mine Cavern (with remnants of past tin mining excavations)
- Alam (Universe) Cavern (with a ceiling height of 72 metres)
- Battlefield Cavern (intriguing formations of fallen stalactites and clusters of rocks)
One of the most captivating aspects of Gua Tempurung is the abundant presence of large stalactites, stalagmites and other intricate rock formations that adorn its interior. To enhance the exploration experience, a small portion of Gua Tempurung has been carefully and delicately developed into a show cave, complete with well-constructed walkways and the convenience of electric lighting.
The extent of the development is very subtle to maintain the natural, untouched beauty of the cave and river system. It’s especially suited for young visitors and families, with light installations and secure handrails, ensuring an enjoyable experience for kids of all ages.

“Absolutely fun. Some challenging obstacles but if my 5yo niece could do it, i rest my case. Weekends could be crowded. So plan ahead. Wear proper attire. Please DO NOT litter as we did find alot of them. We decided to grab as much garbage all the way out but it was sad to know there were humans out there with that mindset.
Anyway, gopro wud be good addition as both your hands and legs will be occupied. Welcome to Perak” – Kames, 5/5 stars
